Mwereni Integrated School for the Blind

Moshi, Tanzania

The Mwereni Integrated School for the Blind is located in Moshi, Tanzania. The school was founded in 1934 and is one of only five schools in all of Tanzania that educates blind children. The school has 600 students aged 5-17, including 80 blind students, with an operating budget of only $3,000 a year. The majority of the blind students were orphaned or abandoned at birth by their families.

In June of 2009, Kristen and Kevin had the honor and privilege to work directly with the school and donate over $50,000 worth of much-needed gifts to the school.  Our Mt. Kilimanjaro team donated 43 Braille writers, paper, magnifiers, canes, and sunglasses to the school.

In 2010, K2 Adventures Foundation donated money for school supplies, new classrooms for the blind students and a bathroom facility with tile floors, running water and toilets for the entire school.

We helped facilitate the building of unfinished classrooms in 2010 for the blind children to learn their Braille skills.

Our direct contributions have grown the blind student population from 23 students in 2009 to 80+ students in 2011!

K2 Adventures Foundation gave $5,000 to help build a new bathroom facility. The old four stall bathroom was dirty and dangerous and used by all 600 students!

In 2011, K2 Adventures Foundation donated $50,000 for the building of the K2 Adventures Foundation and Mendez Family Health Center at the school. The ribbon cutting by Cheryl Mendez was on June 29, 2011 and the grand opening was August 5 when the first child was treated!

The health center was stocked with $60,000 worth of medical supplies and another $12,000 donation from the Solsi Family will provide a full-time nurse and three caregivers to give first aid and basic health care to all the children at the school 24 hours a day, seven days a week!

For most of these children, this will be the first time they will ever received medical care in their life!
